Hey, everybody, Dr. John D’Ambrosio here from the Center for Life Enhancement in Woodstock, Georgia. Today we’re going to talk about natural stress management and relief.

Balancing The Nervous System

There’s a lot of ways to do it, but what is stress? Stress is actually how you are perceiving external stressors. So you notice different people process stress differently. So you may have an issue that doesn’t really faze you say, to be stuck in traffic, but somebody else it could just stress them out, it could put them in such a state. Some people end up getting so stressed to hyperventilate, or even blood pressure can rise. These are all signs of an imbalanced nervous system, because you’re in this fight or flight and you’re not properly regulating, between states of rest, heal and repair and you have an overstimulated stress response. Your body is usually then in a full blown state of inflammation, which is not healthy. So what do we do? How do we naturally relieve stress? Well, as a chiropractor, of course, balancing the nervous system is hugely important. Because if you remove interference from the brain to the rest of the body, and the body can regulate, it can go back and forth between rest, heal and repair properly. If you don’t want to be in fight or flight for the rest of the day, then chiropractic is huge for regulating the nervous system and allowing you to balance stress.

Breathing To Manage Stress

You know, breathing is such an underrated method of balancing out your stress and it is so simple. It’s really just breathing, deep belly breathing, and I personally like it. Just take a few minutes every day to just do this and it makes a huge difference. So inhale, count of four, hold for a count of four. Exhale for a count of four. Again, hold for a count of four. Repeat and do that a few times just whenever you think about it during the day. It’ll do a lot to switch you from that fight or flight to that rest, heal and repair parasympathetic dominant state, which is where you should be most of the time. You want a good healthy balance between the two. You don’t want to be stuck in one or you don’t want to be stuck in the other. There’s issues with either, but you want to be able to bounce back and forth. Taking a few minutes to breathe deep and of course, get your spine and nervous system checked by your chiropractor are great ways to go.
